Drink Driving – The Morning After the Night Before

December 3, 2019

When people think about drink driving, they are usually thinking about what happens when people leave the pub at night and are stopped by the police.  Just as often though, the real stories which give rise to a drink driving convictions are quite different.

It is often a minor road accident – just a shunt – that attracts the attention of the police and which results in roadside testing for drink and drugs.  And this often happens on the morning after the night before.

The fact that you feel fine, and are not responsible for the accident, does nothing to mitigate the alcohol or drug levels in your body.  And, unfortunately, anyone who tells you that you can confidently predict alcohol or drug levels the morning-after you have been drinking in the evening, is not telling the truth.

An arrest, charge and court appearance for drink driving will usually result in a minimum period of disqualification.  But there can often be more broad reaching impacts, perhaps the loss of your job, which can be a very heavy price to pay for a drink driving conviction.

The safest message remains ‘none for the road’.  In some cases, if you are prosecuted, there are legal defences available, and we can discuss these with you.  When a legal defence is not possible, we work hard to mitigate the sentence and get your life back on track.

Your local police force will now have in place its Christmas and New Year drink and drug driving campaign, roadside testing will increase, and officers will be extra vigilant.

We hope that you do not need our services over the festive period, but if you so please be assured that we are here, on your side, 24 hours a day.
