Jules Carey named JUSTICE Human Rights Lawyer of the Year 2010

December 10, 2010

**[Jules Carey][1], a partner at Tuckers Solicitors, has been awarded the [JUSTICE][2] ‘Human Rights Lawyer of the Year Award’ for 2010. The award states that:**

“with unflagging energy and enthusiasm, he has demonstrated all the best qualities of a solicitor dedicated to innovative and difficult work in defence of civil liberties.”

Baroness Kennedy QC who presented the award referred specifically his work in Lotfi Raissi v Secretary of State for Justice, and in the asset freezing case which was the first case to be heard by the new Supreme Court.

Whilst acknowledging the limits of the gesture, Jules dedicated his award to Nasrin Sotoudeh- an Iranian human rights lawyer currently detained and facing prosecution in Iran.

In his acceptance Jules referred to the government’s Green Paper on public funding and the Jackson report as posing the greatest threat to civil liberties in the UK at this time. He described how civil liberties will become consigned to texts books and academia if there is no money to enable individuals to access the courts and to seek redress for breaches of their human rights.
